Living life with full tank

Janet Martin • May 7, 2020

Knowing you are enough already.

Developing the sense of being/having enough already is living life with a full tank.

When you feel “enough already” you know that if this is all there will ever be -- it is enough. That doesn’t mean you won’t get better or move forward, it just means you do it from a sense of having enough already. This takes away the craving and the desperation. It lets you make choices from a place of feeling resourced; feeling you are taking the journey with a full tank. Moving forward without feeling you are trying to fill yourself up—feeling full already.

Someone recently said to me, she always used the practice to get through difficulties, but now sees it’s better to fill up first and then weather the difficulties. Author/teacher Rick Hanson calls this being resourced; I call it keeping your tank full. When your tank is full you are always ready for the trip (even an unexpected one), you don't run out of gas along the way. When you feel like you have a hole inside that needs to be filled—you don’t have enough gas for the trip.

So what if your tank is feeling less than full? It’s a time to fill up with self-compassion—to love yourself, to hold yourself with love, kindness, and forgiveness. To self-soothe, allowing yourself to be perfectly imperfect. To know that it’s enough to be just as you are. To know that if this is all there is-- it’s enough—in this moment and the next. That’s what gives you the strength to be more – to start the trip towards healing, growing, and getting stronger.
