The world could use more wise men and women right now. While wisdom and compassion working together are at the heart of mindfulness practice, are we really getting wiser?
Recently I listened to a neuroscientist talk about wisdom. He maintains that our definition of wisdom has not chanted in a couple of centuries. He also maintains that we are more likely to get wiser as we age—even postulates it is why humans live so long—we are supposed to impart wisdom to the younger generations. He lists 6 essential components of wisdom: self-reflection, pro-social behaviour (kindness, compassion, empathy), emotional regulation with positivity bias, decisiveness amid uncertainty and diversity, social decision making, and spirituality
I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw that I teach and practice all 6 of these components although, I need to teach decisiveness a little more often! Also I am getting older—so that should also help. The good news is that we can develop each of these qualities through mindfulness. None of them are beyond the reach of anyone! Here’s to us all becoming wiser! |
