Make the most of Summer --or any season

Janet Martin • August 2, 2024

Summer in Canada is special--its short and sweet--so enjoy it!

Making the most of summer is an individual pursuit, but here are some tips that work for anyone:

Get some Balance--manage your energy and make sure you have energy for what is important to you.  Fun and family should not get the dregs of your energy.  Focus on what is important.

Prioritize time with friends and family-- these are the people who sustain you, support you and bring you joy. Too often we prioritize work, getting things done, what we think we need to be or what we think we need to do over friends and family. That does not mean we don't do our best at work, it means we understand work's place in our lives. it means we are judicious with whem we cancel with family and friends--use the 5 year rule.-ask yourself what will be more important 5 years from now.

Get Outside--the benefits of being in nature are irrefutable in terms of overall physical and mental health. Make it a goal to do one thing with nature everyday--touch a plant, see the sun or moon, feel the grass under your feet, water a plant--sit on a park bench.

Get away from the everyday! Do something different--break up the routine--even in small ways--eat something new, visit somewhere you haven't been in a long time or ever, wear a new colour, try a new experience.

Practice Self-care and Compassion--Give yourself a break,  Be kind to yourself and others. Get all your regular check-ups, eat well most of the time, exercise, pamper yourself. See if you can be a little kinder to yourself today than yesterday. See if you can be a little kinder to others today than yesterday.

Finally Do nice things for others simply because you can.
